Frequent Questions and Answers About .中国 Domain Registration

I. Understanding .中国 Domain

What is a ".中国" domain?

The ".中国" domain, like an English domain name, is the Internet's "address.” The ".中国" domain technically conforms to the multilingual domain international standards published by the IETF in March 2003 (RFC3454, RFC3490, RFC3491, RFC3492). The ".中国" domain is a pure Chinese top-level domain representing China on the global Internet, and, like the .CN domain, it is part of China's domain system and the global Internet domain system. It is globally recognized and unique. The use of a ".中国" domain is similar to that of a .CN domain. It serves as a basic Internet service and can be used to provide WWW, EMAIL, FTP, and other services, such as:

1. Creating a personal or organizational homepage;

2. Establishing a personal or organizational email system for sending and receiving emails, as well as external communication;

3. Using it for business or product promotion, such as displaying the homepage address on business cards or advertisements;

4. Redirecting the domain to one's own microblog or social media page.

What are the advantages of registering a .中国 domain?

1. It is a domain for Chinese people, easy to remember, and promotes better outreach and communication;

2. It supports Chinese input, catering to the usage habits of Chinese users;

3. It is globally recognized and supports automatic encoding, so both simplified and traditional Chinese input can be used equivalently;

4. It has a significant Chinese identity, reflecting the value and positioning of the user;

5. It provides all-Chinese services and is governed by Chinese laws, ensuring comprehensive protection of user interests;

6. Domain resources are abundant, offering users the chance to find a satisfactory domain name.

II. Choosing a .中国 Domain for Registration

What are the naming rules for .中国 domains?

1. You may use a combination of Chinese characters, English letters (a-z, case-insensitive), Arabic numerals (0-9), and half-width hyphens ("-"). However, the hyphen cannot appear at the beginning or end of the domain name.

2. As per Announcement on Adjustments to .中国 Domain Registration and Services, starting from October 29, 2012, as an independent top-level domain, ".中国" follows the naming rules of .CN domains and other top-level domains, allowing combinations of Chinese characters, English letters, and Arabic numerals.

  Examples:

  Single use of Chinese characters: 互联网中心.中国

  Single use of English letters: CNNIC.中国

  Single use of Arabic numerals: 58813000.中国

  Combination of Chinese characters and English letters: 互联网CNNIC.中国

  Combination of English letters and Arabic numerals: CNNIC58813000.中国

  Combination of Chinese characters and Arabic numerals: 互联网58813000.中国

3. The maximum registrable length for a .中国 domain name, after being converted to Punycode (conversion method can be found in "Punycode Query"), is 63 characters or 20 Chinese characters.

How to choose a .中国 domain to register?

You can select a .中国 domain based on your needs and preferences, such as:

2. Log into the WHOIS Query System on the official website to check domain information.

You can visit the official website (http://www.cnnic.cn/) to use the WHOIS Query System to verify the registration status of a domain.

Scenario 1: When the domain name you searched for is not registered, the message will display "The information you queried does not exist." At this point, you can try submitting a registration application, which is displayed as follows:

Scenario 2: If the domain name you selected has already been registered, the registration information for the domain will be displayed. At this point, you can take the following actions:

  (1) Add a "-" (hyphen), Chinese characters, letters, or numbers, or change the combination to attempt another registration;

    (2) Contact the "Registrant" of the domain name as shown in the WHOIS query results for further negotiation.

Scenario 3: When the domain name is a reserved registration, it means that only the corresponding reserved unit can apply for registration. When the domain name is a prohibited registration, it means no users can apply for registration. For more details, you can contact our center or the registration service organization for confirmation, which is displayed as follows:

For application requirements for reserved domain names, please refer to how to register reserved domain names.

5. Sign the Domain Registration Agreement and Keep Relevant Evidence

When handling domain registration services, it is recommended that you sign a paper or online registration agreement or contract with the registration service organization and retain the relevant evidence to better protect your rights.

6. Submit Authentic, Accurate, and Complete Registration Information and Application Materials

When submitting your domain registration application to the registration service organization, you need to submit the application materials, including color electronic copies, such as scanned copies, color photocopies, or photos of the original documents. The materials usually include:

  (1) Identification materials for individuals;

  (2) Identification materials for legal entities or non-legal entities;

  (3) Other materials related to the domain registration application.

7. Verify Domain Registration Information

You can verify the submitted registration information by checking the following to ensure the registrant, registration period, and registrant’s contact email are authentic, accurate, and complete and fully match the information you filled out during registration:

     (1) Our center’s “WHOIS query" system;

  (2) The domain query system of the registration service organization.

8. Monitor Domain Review Status

The domain name you registered must meet the following requirements to pass the review:

  (1) The domain must comply with the requirements of “Internet Domain Management Measures";

  (2) The domain registration information must be authentic, accurate, and complete, and the identity information must be verifiable by national authorities’ data;

  (3) The application materials must match the registration information in the “WHOIS query" system.

  After submitting the online application, the registration service organization will conduct a preliminary review of the domain registration information and materials. Once the preliminary review is passed, the registration service organization will submit the application materials to our center. We will complete the review of the domain registration information and materials within 2 working days.

      You can monitor your domain’s review progress and status through the registration service organization.

9. After the domain registration is completed, monitor the record-filing review status via Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Filing Management System.

    Once your domain passes the review, it means the domain registration is successful. The domain itself does not require filing. If you use the domain for website applications, you need to complete the website filing process according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s (MIIT) requirements for website management.

    The website filing process is not handled or approved by our center. You will need to contact your internet access service provider or the domain registration service organization to assist you in completing the website filing through the respective provincial communication management bureau.

10. Activate DNS and Enable Domain Name

Similar to CN domain names, after completing the registration process for a .中国 domain, users need to configure the corresponding DNS, WWW, Email, and other servers for the .中国 domain to function properly. In simple terms, the configuration process for a .中国 domain is similar to that of a CN domain. However, due to the fact that existing DNS, WWW, Email, and other servers do not support direct editing in Chinese in their configuration files, the domain must be converted to Punycode before configuration to work properly. Users can use the Punycode Query tools on our center’s website to perform the Punycode conversion.

  Specific Enabling Methods:

  Method 1 (Recommended):

(1) Set the DNS servers for the .中国 domain to the DNS servers provided by the registration service organization for Chinese domain resolution;

(2) Entrust the registration service organization to configure the .中国 domain resolution server;

(3) Officially enable the .中国 domain.

    If you are using an Apache HTTP server, your service provider can configure the DNS resolution server’s Virtual Host. The details are as follows:

        After a user registers a Chinese domain name, they need to configure the corresponding DNS servers to complete the resolution of the domain name. Detailed Steps for Enabling:

1. Use the online Punycode conversion tool or offline conversion tools to convert the registered Chinese domain into Punycode encoding;

2. Add the newly registered Chinese domain as a subdomain in the DNS server’s configuration file;

3. Designate the DNS server as the primary server for resolving the subdomain of the Chinese domain;

4. Specify a domain data file to store the domain records for the Chinese subdomain;

5. Edit the domain data file to set parameters such as the series number, update cycle, and add domain records.

            Method 2:

  (1) Set the DNS servers for the .中国 domain to the user’s own .中国 domain resolution servers;

(2) The user configures the .中国 domain resolution server independently.

The domain registration service organization will cancel the domain after 30 days. If you neither express a desire not to renew nor renew the domain, the registration service organization will cancel the domain on the expiry date.
