What is domain name

Generally speaking, a domain name is a kind of character symbol which is used to verify and locate the computers on the internet. Practically speaking, your domain name is the core of your Internet identity, your online brand. Your customers will remember this name and use it to find out about your products and services. And since no two parties can ever hold the same domain name simultaneously, your Internet identity is totally unique. 

Technically, a domain name is an addressing construct used for identifying and locating computers on the Internet. While computers use Internet Protocol (IP) numbers to locate each other on the Internet, people find them hard to remember. Therefore, domain names were developed to permit the use of easily remembered words and phrases to identify Internet addresses. Domain name services are belong to the basic internet services, base on which www, email, FTP and many other application services can be provided.


What kind of domain name registration is available?

According to the partition of internet domain name system, .CN is the country code top level domain of China. Therefore, .CN is also the specific symbol of China in the Internet world. In China, .CN also be separated into two categories of second level domains, i.e. sort domain names and regional domain names.
sort domain names are comparted in accordance with the character of applicant organizations, including:

AC --- Scientific research Institutions
COM -- Companies and enterprises (for commercial use)
EDU -- Educational Institutions
GOV -- Governmental Departments
NET -- Internet connectors such as Network Information Center (NIC) and Network Operational Center (NOC) 
ORG -- All kinds of non-profit organizations

regional domain names are comparted in accordance with the names of different domestice districts, and complies to national standard issued by the former National Technology Supervision Bureau, including 34 "district domain names", suitable for provinces, municipalities and municipalities directly under the central government. For instance, .bj stands for Beijing, .sh stands for Shanghai.

You may also directly register second level domain names under .cn.;

The second level domain name is a domain name form that registrants may choose to register under .cn ccTLD. For instance, CNNIC.CN is the second level domain name of The Internet Network Information Center.

People may also register Chinese domain names(CDN). Currently, CNNIC offers three forms Chinese TLD: .
中国(China),.公司(Company) and .网络(Network). Further more, ".CN" Chinese domain name is bundled with ".中国"CDN.

Is there any restriction for registering a domain name?

Any of the following contents shall not be included in any domain name registered and used by any organization or individual:

1. Those that are against the basic principles prescribed in the Constitution;
2. Those jeopardize national security, leak state secrets, intend to overturn the government, or disrupt of state integrity;
3. Those harm national honor and national interests; 
4. Those instigate hostility or discrimination between different nationalities, or disrupt the national solidarity;
5. Those violate the state religion policies or propagate cult and feudal superstition;
6. Those spread rumors, disturb public order or disrupt social stability;
7. Those spread pornography, obscenity, gambling, violence, homicide, terror or instigate crimes;
8. Those insult, libel against others and infringe other people's legal rights and interests; or
9. Other contents prohibited in laws, rules and administrative regulations.


Where shall I apply for registering a domain name?

In 'China Internet Domain Name administration Policies", the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) set the China's domain name administration and service mechanism into three levels, they respectively refer to the MII, the domain name registry, and domain name registrars. The MII takes the responsibility of administrating China Internet domain names; CNNIC, as the sole domain name registry, takes the responsibility of maintaining the central data base of .CN domain names, providing domain name resolution service, carrying out relative technical and policy researches. CNNIC will no longer offer the registration service. The registrars provide the specific registration services to the public.


How to register .CN domain names?

Follow the rule of " first come, first serve";

Fill in "the application form of .CN domain name registration" online;

Sign the domain name registration agreement with the registrar you choose. The applicant should guarantee in the registration agreement that:
Obey the laws and regulations related to the Internet;
Obey "China Internet Domain Name Registration Regulations" and other relative regulations issued by the governing department;
Obey the current and future versions of "Implementing Rules for China Internet Domain Name Registration" and " CNNIC Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy" and other relative rules or regulations;
Submit real, accurate and complete registration information.

Notice:
 gov is only available for governmental institutions, the applicant is required to submit the following written materials other than online registration form:
a. The application form of domain name registration with the official seal 
b. Certificates for proving the applicant organization is a governmental institution.
 The regulations for registering the third level domain names under the second level ".EDU" are issued by China Education and Research Network Center (CERnet).


What kind of domain name shall I register? 

A good domain name is usually consistent with the following information:

1. The Chinese and English abbreviation of the organization's name 
2. Trade mark
3. The content of the advertisement messages, while within no more than 20 characters
4. Interesting names, such as hello, howareyou, yes, 168, etc.


How to name my own domain name?

Domain name conflict may occur when the domain name you applied has been registered by others. The general resolution is to change another name, add "-" or other letters on such name, or choose other second level domains you want. Here are some examples to avoid registration conflicts:

Domain name registration conflicts can also be solved by domain name dispute resolution policies or other legal means.


How to solve the domain name disputes?

Any individual or institution has the right to submit his/her/its complains to the dispute resolution (arbitration) institutions when the domain name registered by one party is considered conflicting with the complainant's legal interests. The judgment make out by the arbitration institutions is only involved in the disputes on changing the domain name holder's information.

Currently, there are two CNNIC accredited neutral domain name dispute resolution institutions: China International Economic Trade Arbitration Center (CIETAC) and Hong Kong International Arbitration Center (HKIAC). The two institutions had formally accept the .CN and Chinese domain name dispute cases since September 30, 2002.


What should be advised after the registration of a domain name?

1. Renewal on schedule: the application date is the date that the registry received the first effective application for the registration. The registry will inform the registrant the exact application date. The close date for collecting the renewal fee is the 15th day after the application date of each year. 

2. The registrant should inform the registrar in time if any registration information changes.

3. Be aware of keeping the password provided by the registrar, you need it to revise your web information.


How to use my domain name?

1. Establish an email system, allowing every staff to receive and send emails through your company's domain name address;
2. Establish a home page of your company;
3. Mark your home page address on any forms of your advertisement.
